Mad World Collab

"Thanks for ruining a great song."

submission: Mad World Collab
date: January 2, 2006

Typically, I don't vote based on pure distaste for what was done with the movie. I usually give it a chance due to talent, time spent, and artistic ability. This movie on the other hand, just left such a foul taste in my mouth I couldn't help but give it such a poor score.

I love the source material. Mad World by Gary Jules and by Tears for Fears are both fantastic songs. They are very deep and very though provoking. And that is what really got me with this collaboration, the lack of thinking. Most authors took the song by it's surface value, it really kills me to see someone take such a song and take the lyrics so very literally. Some even misinturpreted the lyrics, they made them silly and stupid. That is quite upsetting.

Next time you try to make a movie like this, try and get a group of people who are willing to agree on making a movie that has feeling. Not just another collab that was thrown together just to latch on to something cool or popular. Try to agree on a simple style or understanding for the song. Simple attempts to link the movie together better and understand your source material could make a movie like this ten times better than what you have here.

I'm sorry about being so negative, but I just can't stand seeing a song like this being so poorly represented. :P

Author's Response:

You're not the first to have this particular problem with what has been presented. Had I ever heard the song before signing on I might have put a bit more thought into what should go into it, but a lot of clips that don't really fit were approved before I could do do anything to prevent their showcasing.

One thing you really must understand is that a collab like this one -- with so many authors -- is bound to have a few people miss the point, or simply translate the song differently. Many authors were only privy to the 3-4 second clip of the song that they were working on, and a line like 'happy birthday', no matter how it's sung can mean lots of things. Remove the context of the lyrics and you open up any of them to become something else.

There was no realistic way to link any of the clips together since -- and this is the biggest problem -- nobody was in direct contact with anyone else. Had there been some way for 25 people on 3 continents to sit down and discuss each clip with easy feedback, Q&A, or even storyboarding, there may have been a bit more cohesion, but considering more than half of them are under 16, I'm pretty sure that couldn't have happened without breaking a few international laws.

Lastly, I'm not going to agree with the poor representation. IMHO this collab -- as disjointed as it is -- represents the many facets of the song as intended by the songwriter as well as the singer. Granted some clips go a bit overboard and drift into the realm of absurdity, but I think the song has something to do with that as well.

But alas, interpretation is the device of the viewer, and I cannot fault you for your perception.

Thanks for the review. I really am glad to read ones like this -- they're far more informative than 'That was great!' or 'You made me cry!' or 'I hate you for assassinating my contrived delusion!'...

Scratch that last one, I don't think most reviewers here even have a concept of what a 'delusion' is... and most of them can barely spell 'ass' much less 'assassinate'...

I'm going to stop typing now, I think I'm tired...

You fail for the following reasons.....

1. You are not from Detroit....Heck, I used to live there....I'm less of a failure at this than you are and I haven't attempted.

2. This is was obviously made after watching the Particle Man movie that was featured on the front page.

3. You own a Papa Roach Poster.....

Next time don't make an ass of yourself infront of a camera and submit it for others to see.....You're only supposed to sumbit movies of other people doing such things, otherwise people won't like you. So sad :(

Author's Response:

Oh yeah, I fail? look at your picture...haha you fail at life.

"obviously this was made after the particle man movie".

ummm no shit?

"You own a papa roach poster"

Hmm...david bowie? haha it seems like we own YOU. Nice review, asshole.

"Made me laugh...."

I really have a hard time standing ganster rap, it's utter crap that is spreading a negative message. It has no place in popular society, yet has somehow made it's way onto our televisions and on our radios. The only people who listen to it are middleclass wannabe tough middleschool students and bad people who actually do the things described in the songs. Your movie brought that idea and made it funny. It may have not been made very well, but it was funny and I agree with the idea behind it. Sooooooooo, go you.

Half Life 2: The Nativity

"Failure."

date: December 26, 2004

Well........This movie was quite a dissapointment. I've been waiting quite a while for someone to make a quality Half-Life 2 fan movie, and it seems I still have to wait.

Although the drawings were nice, the animation consisted of little more than simple tweening. You seem to have a very stylistic way of drawing people, which is good.........Just not for fan movies.

The biggest let down was the plot, and since it seems to be a "comedy movie", the humor. The story has nothing to do with the actual game other than the exsistance of ingame characters and some rather nonfunny jokes. The jokes given were badly done and timed, not to mention stupid.

I could go on to critique the rest like the sound and things, but I think that is well represented by the scores I gave them. To sum this review up I'd like to say, If you are going to make a Half-Life 2 movie, please don't make it a comedy. It doesn't fit with the game at all, it's a serious game that would be done better justice with a serious fan movie.

Author's Response:

I don't tween, I do all human movements manually, and only over use tweens for backgrounds/full scene movements.

Author's Response:

First thing I have to say is......Learn how to draw.Don't just try to copy that "Japanese Look" you see on the T.V. You failed, and failed miserably. Second of all, The plot is total shit. I understand you had to have the theme of hope in it, but that isn't the way to approach it. That just comes across cheesy, and is way too predictable. Come back after studying proper storytelling and art techniques.....

Author's Response:

so? you copy sonic. and you dont even do good animation. so try not to say anything bad. but a review is a review.

"Whoa! This looks awsome!"

date: May 30, 2004

Holy Cow! This looks even better than it did in Alphas! The only thing that needs some work is voice acting. I know that you aren't a native English speaker, and that's why I'm offering to help. I could probably hook you up with some of my voice actors and actually I could help too. So just contact me on AIM, My name is HyperactiveYouth.(Also, I noticed I'm on your favorite artist list. It's nice to find some fans with talent.)

Author's Response:

Sure, thanks for the suggestion, acutally I had the idea to make auditions for the voices.

We may talk sometime later.

Yet another poorly animated stick movie....You have to understand that you are not good at animating, and you should take criticism in a positive way. If you submit a stick movie to newgrounds, you should never get defensive if someone complains about it(NG hates most stick movies). Instead if you want good reviews, try and make a movie that doesn't consist of poorly drawn people mindlessly hurting eachother. If you respond negatively to this review, that proves you are a dick and can't even take criticism given in a mostly positive way.

Author's Response:

Whatever... listen, this movie wasn't about the sticks, it wasn't really about DMC and it wasn't about plot, it was about pure, hardcore, unique action. Nothing More. If you can't see the movie for that, fine. And I'm not a dick, dickhead.

It's funny whenever people with as much skill at animating and drawing come along, someone always tends to accuse them of tracing. As said that is not the case, so nice job and keep on submitting!

Thanks, I appreciate it!
